Instructional Materials for Optics/Photonics

Since 2000, the PHOTON instructional team has been developing curriculum for teaching optics and photonics at the high school/two year college level.  All materials have been field-tested nationally by teacher/faculty participants of the two projects and by the students in their classrooms.

LIGHT - INTRODUCTION TO OPTICS AND PHOTONICS This 15 chapter textbook covers optics principles and photonics applications at an algebra/trigonometry level. The text begins with an introduction to laser safety, followed by the physics and behavior of light, and concluding with an overview of modern photonics applications including imaging, holography, optical manufacturing and biophotonics.  The text includes an appendix with derivations of text equations and a glossary of optical terms. End of chapter problems are included, and problem solutions are available from the authors. The book may be purchased in a full color version (hard or soft cover) and a soft cover black and white version. It may also be purchased for download. All profits go to support optics education. THE BOOK IS AVAILABLE AT http://stores.lulu.com/PHOTON2.

The PHOTON2 Laboratory Equipment Kit contains both "science lab" and industry quality equipment allowing investigations of basic physics (e.g., reflection, refraction, wave behaviors) and photonics applications (e.g., interferometry and reflection holograms.) Additional kit information may be found here.

A Laboratory Experiment Manual accompanies the equipment kit. The manual contains 25 student and teacher tested experiments featuring explicit instructions as well as thought provoking applications and extensions.

PHOTON2 Lab Videos were originally intended to assist instructors learning to use the Laboratory Equipment Kit. They can also be used by students when it is impossible or inconvenient to perform an experiment, or as an introduction to optics lab techniques. The videos are available at www.photonprojects.org.

PHOTON Explorations  The Explorations answer the need for simple, low cost demonstrations of optical principles. Originally based on demonstrations provided by PHOTON and PHOTON2 participating teachers, the Explorations also include experiments that use the low-cost OSA Optics Discovery Kit available from Edmund Optics (www.edmundoptics.com). Although originally designed for use at the middle school level, the Explorations are also  being used in high school and college classrooms. The Explorations may be downloaded from www.photonprojects.org. Videos of the explorations are available at PHO 101_Online/Explorations
